Install Windows Server 2012 Foundation and take advantage of its new features
This exclusive version is mostly designed for for small businesses without virtualization requirements and it supports up to 15 users and servers with a physical processor which is more than enough for most small businesses. However, you do not need a Windows CAL to configure Foundation Server. The server must be hosted on a physical machine.
IP address management (IPAM)
This version brings a new feature Called IPAM. It provides an internal framework for the location and management of IP address spaces in networks. You can manage and control servers running the Domain Name Service (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). You can also automatically locate the IP address and perform other monitoring and auditing tasks.
Deduplication of data allows the search and deletion of duplicate data, without affecting their fidelity or integrity. Consequently, it helps you save redundant data in a separate location in System Volume Information (SVI) and points to the files that serve as the source template. This can free up space especially when using thousands of files on your network. There are also some limitations related to data deduplication. In fact, it is not possible to deduce a system volume, nor the VDH of virtual machines.
Shared Nothing Live Migration
Microsoft gives a clear advantage for the small and medium business virtualization market by introducing Shared Nothing Live Migration. You have the option to perform a live migration without resorting to SAN backend, which allows you to support the advantages of virtualization and its availability for those companies that cannot afford the cost or complexity of each SAN.
